Coach Rick Garretson – Head Coach, Varsity

Coach Rick Garretson grew up in Westminster, California. He attended Servite High School in Anaheim, California, where he played wide receiver and received honors as a High School All-American and All-C.I.F. player. He played football at San Diego State for four years, from 1974 to 1978. He coached the youth football team, Gilbert Dawgs, for three years. Coach Garretson’s 23 year high school coaching career includes one year at Westminster High School coaching wide receivers, sixteen years as Offensive Coordinator for Servite High School, and seven years at Chandler High School coaching wide receivers and quarterbacks. He is married to wife, Wendy, and they have three children. Coach Garretson’s personal coaching philosophy is “Prepare to win.”


Chris Chick– Run Game Coordinator / Offensive Line Coach, Varsity

Coach Chris Chick grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona where he attended Saguaro High School. As an offensive and defensive lineman for Saguaro, he played on the 1995 State Championship team. In 1996, he earned All-City, All-Region and All-State honors. He attended Mesa Community College and in 1998 his team won the Western States Football League Championship. Coach Chick attended the University of California, Berkeley, on an athletic scholarship and started at left tackle in 2000. He was an assistant offensive line coach in 2001. He graduated in 2002. He coached at Saguaro High School from 2003 to 2011 winning State Championships in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011. He joined the Chandler High School coaching staff in 2012 and assisted in their win of the State Championships in 2014 and 2016. Coach Chick’s parents are graduates of Arizona State University. His father is an attorney. Coach Chick’s personal coaching philosophy is “Do it right, do it light. Do it wrong, do it long.”

Chad Carpenter – Wide Receivers, Varsity

Coach Chad Carpenter, also known as Coach Carp, is from Weiser, Idaho. He attended Weiser High School where he was an All-State Quarterback and player of the year in Idaho. He is a member of the Idaho High School Hall of Fame. He attended Washington State University and, as a three year starter, played in two major bowl games. He was an All-PAC 10 Wide Receiver. Coach Carpenter was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the 5th round and played three years for them before moving to the Cleveland Browns for one year. He has coached high school football for 12 years in Arizona: five years at Basha High, one year at Mountain View and six years at Chandler High School. Coach Carpenter and his wife, Melissa, have 4 children, Devin, Clay, Tanner, and Cole. His personal coaching philosophy is “I will give the most to my players all the time. I expect the most out of them as well.”

Collin Bottrill – Inside Receivers, Varsity

Coach Collin Bottrill grew up in Farmington, Michigan, where he attended Farmington High School, later graduating from Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, Arizona. While at Farmington, he played tight end and kicker and was an All-Region Defensive End. He attended the University of Arizona. He coached youth football in Mesa in 1994 and led the team to State and National Championships. His players went on to Westwood High School where they had the only undefeated team in school history. Coach Bottrill started coaching varsity football in 2000 and coached at Basha High School from 2004 to 2010. He joined Chandler High School in 2011 and helped coach the varsity team to a State Championship in 2014 and 2016. Coach Bottrill and his wife, Lorry, have been married since 1996 and have two sons, Conner, and Ryan. Both of his sons play hockey.

Eric Richardson – Assistant Head Coach/Running Backs, Varsity

Coach Eric Richardson was born in Atlanta, Georgia, but grew up in Denver, Colorado. He attended George Washington High School in Denver where he played football, baseball and basketball. He lettered for three years in football and was All-State his senior year. He later attended Arizona State University where he played football for two years. Coach Richardson coached at the youth level for five years for a Chandler Pop Warner team. He coached George Washington High School for three years, Arizona Boys Ranch for two years and has been with Chandler High School for 21 years. He is currently the Assistant Head Coach and Running Backs Coach for Chandler. He has three sisters and two brothers.

Steve Vaught – Defensive Coordinator, Varsity

Coach Steve Vaught is originally from, and grew up in Portage, Indiana. He attended Portage High School, playing tight end and cornerback. He attended the University of Saint Francis and played inside linebacker for five years, where he was a three time NAIA National Runner Up and two time NAIA National Semi Finalist. Coach Vaught has coached varsity football for eight years. He coached defensive backs for one year at Michigan City High School in Indiana and coached defensive backs and inside linebackers at Homewood/Flossmoor High School in Illinois and Coronado High School in Scottsdale, Arizona. Last year was Coach Vaught’s second year at Chandler High School.  He started in 2016 coaching safeties and tight ends at the freshman level. Last year and this year he is the varsity safeties coach. He is married to his wife Maribel and they have two children, Bryce (11) and Brianna (8). His personal coaching philosophy is “I enjoy teaching young men about the greatest sport on earth.”

Russell Scott – Cornerbacks, Varsity

Coach Russell Scott was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. He played wide receiver at Buena High School where he was named 1st Team All-City for Tucson and 2nd Team All-State. He attended Southern Utah University where he was a defensive back and achieved All-Conference honors two years in a row. He has coached at Eastern Arizona College and at Grossmont College in San Diego, California. Coach Scott is in his 18th season at Chandler High School coaching defensive backs. His personal coaching philosophy is “To start slow with the basic fundamentals which will create two great environments: one of learning and one of results.”

Lionel Manuel, Jr. – Safeties, Varsity

Coach Lionel Manuel, Jr., also known as L-Train, is from La Puente, California. He attended Bassett High School where he played quarterback from 1976 to 1980. He attended Citrus Community College as a quarterback and running back from 1980 to 1981. He then attended University of the Pacific as a wide receiver and running back. He played wide receiver for the New York Giants, from 1984 to 1991, and was the first receiver to gain 1000 yards. In 2010, Coach Manuel coached the youth football team, Red Mountain Devils, as Head Coach and performed public relations duties for them. He coached high school football at Dwight Morrow High School and at several community colleges including Citrus Community, La Verne College and Riverside Community College. He and his wife, Paulina, have three children. Coach Manuel’s personal coaching philosophy is “Get it done!”

Roger Murdock – Inside Linebackers, Varsity

Coach Roger Murdock, whose nickname is Buzzsaw, grew up in Nevada. He attended Carson High School where he played football. He later attended Santa Rosa Junior College and graduated with a degree from University of Nevada in Reno. Coach Murdock has over 30 years total coaching experience. He has been with Chandler High School for 18 years. Prior to Chandler High School, he coached at Liberty High School for five years. He also coached at Missouri Western State for three years and coached three years at Carson High School. He has three children, McKenzie (22), Mason (19) and McCaleb (16). Coach Murdock’s personal coaching philosophy is “The harder you work, the luckier you get!”

Sam Watts – Kickers, Varsity

Coach Sam Watts grew up in Rushville, New York and currently lives in Victor, New York. He attended Marcus Whitman High School, in Rushville, New York, where he played football from 1979-1981. He later attended East Carolina University. In 2003-2010, Coach Watts was a kicking and punting coach at Sweet Home High School in Amherst, New York. He was also a kicking and punting coach at Erie Community College in Orchard Park, New York, from 2000-2015. Coach Watts personal coaching philosophy is “I have a talent for recognizing young, emergent athletes and developing them into successful men, both on and off the field.”

Andrew Knoche – Defensive Line/Defensive Coordinator, Varsity

Coach Andrew Knoche was raised in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin and played football for South Milwaukee High School. He attended the University of Wisconsin in Oshkosh. He coached St. Francis High School’s junior varsity defensive backs, from 2004 to 2006. He was the junior varsity defensive back coach and Defensive Coordinator for Chandler High School in 2011 through 2013. In 2014, he was Defensive Coordinator for Shadow Mountain High School’s varsity team. He returned to Chandler High School in 2015 to coach varsity outside linebackers. Coach Knoche’s personal coaching philosophy is to “Challenge my players to be the best young men they can be, on and off the field.”

Jeff Tallman – Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator, Junior Varsity

Coach Jeff Tallman grew up in Ely, Nevada. He attended White Pine High School where he was an All-State football player. He later attended college at University of Jamestown. Coach Tallman has over 21 years of coaching experience having begun his career as a Varsity Assistant at Kingman High School in Kingman, Arizona. From 2001 to 2005, he was a Varsity Assistant at Thunderbird High School and spent three seasons as a Varsity Assistant at North Canyon High School, both of which are in Phoenix, Arizona. Coach Tallman joined the Chandler High School coaching staff in 2008 and this will be his sixth year as Head Coach for Junior Varsity.

Mike Denney – Passing Game Coordinator, Junior Varsity

Coach Denny was born in Celina, Ohio. In 1981, he moved to Chandler, Arizona and has lived there ever since. Coach Denny graduated from Chandler High School in 1994. At Chandler, he was a three year varsity letterman. On Varsity he played quarterback and was a two year team captain . He later attended Chandler Gilbert Community College. He coached youth football for three years, during that time he was head coach and offensive coordinator. Coach Denny spent nine years coaching at Basha High School: two years as Freshman Offensive Coordinator, one year Junior Team Head Coach, five years Special Teams Coordinator and Varsity Running Back Coach. He was also a recruiting coordinator for two years. Coach Denny has been married for 21 years to his wife, Christine. Together they have one son, Zachary, and two daughters, Brooklyn and Reece. His personal coaching philosophy is “Excellence is not a singular act but a habit – you are what you repeatedly do.”

Adam Melsek – Offensive Line, Junior Varsity

Coach Adam Melsek was born in Chicago and moved to Arizona at age two. He attended Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix where he was a three year varsity player as an offensive and defensive lineman. He achieved 1st Team All Region Offensive Line twice and 1st Team All Division Offensive Line for one year. He later attended the University of Wyoming where he played on the offensive line. After leaving University of Wyoming due to injury, he continued his education at Arizona State University. He coached for six years at the youth level at Shea Middle School, achieving one championship and spent eight years as Offensive Line Coach at Shadow Mountain High School. Coach Melsek’s parents are father, Dan, who spent four years on the offensive line at Illinois, and his mother, Barbara. His brothers are Jeff and Matt. His personal coaching philosophy is “Building student athletes’ knowledge, skills and character, on and off the field.”

Darin Rathbun – Linebackers/Defensive Coordinator, Junior Varsity

Coach Darin Rathbun was born in Albany, New York, and grew up in Ticonderoga, New York. He attended Ticonderoga High School where he played quarterback and defensive back. He also played basketball and ran track. After high school, Coach Rathbun attended Union College in Schenectady, New York where he played defensive back. He has 21 years of coaching experience at all levels. This is his fourth year coaching at Chandler where he also teaches boys PE and Comprehensive Health. Coach Rathbun has two daughters, Maddy and Remy. His personal coaching philosophy is “Maximum effort 24/7/365 breeds champions for life!”

Coach Jared Baker – Outside Linebackers, Junior Varsity

Coach Jared Baker was born and raised in Gilbert, Arizona. He attended Mesquite High School where he was a four year varsity player as outside linebacker and fullback. He achieved All Region Linebacker for three years, 1st Team All State, and Regional Defensive Player of the Year. He later attended both Arizona State University and University of Arizona. At U of A he played one season as a “cat” backer, a hybrid of outside linebacker and strong safety. Coach Baker has eleven years of experience coaching varsity at three different high schools, Mesquite High, Gilbert High, and now at Chandler High School. He has also served as a Defensive Coordinator and Linebacker Coach. Coach Baker’s parents are Beth and Bill Baker and he has two brothers, Tony and Justin, one sister, Courtney, and his girlfriend is McKenna. Coach Baker’s coaching philosophies are “Building men of character” and “Attitude and effort.”

Michael Underwood – Secondary, Junior Varsity

Coach Michael Underwood was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. He is the youngest of three boys. He attended Tucson High Magnet School, where he was a three-year letterman competing on offense, defense and as a return specialist. After high school, he attended Scottsdale Community College and Western New Mexico University and played defensive back. He began his coaching career at the youth level for the Chandler Youth Football League with the Chandler Rattlers. The Rattlers would go on to be crowned three time City Champions, two time State Champions and a National Runner Up. He began coaching at Chandler High School in 2012, later accepting a position as Defensive Coordinator at McClintock High School. He has now returned to Chandler High as coach of the secondary for Junior Varsity. He has always been inspired to work with the youth in his community and has volunteered as a mentor with Phoenix Youth at Risk and Junior Achievement. He is the father of two beautiful girls whom he credits for helping him develop the patience required for coaching. His personal philosophy is “I have been bestowed a gift that has allowed me to connect and develop relationships with young people in the spirit of inspiring and mentoring. I will never take that gift for granted.”

Brandon Summers –Quarterbacks/Running Backs, Junior Varsity

Coach Brandon Summers is originally from Kansas City, Missouri but grew up in Detroit, Michigan where he attended Southfield High School. While at Southfield, he was a two-year starter at quarterback earning 1st Team All State, 1st Team All City, 1st Team All League and Team MVP honors. Coach Summers attended Toledo University for two years, playing quarterback and then later attended Youngstown State University for two years. At Youngstown State he earned Newcomer of the Year and Team MVP honors, and was player of the week six times. Coach Summers also played quarterback in the Canadian Football League for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Edmonton Eskimos. Coach Summers’ parents are Derrick and Angela Summers and he has two younger brothers, Derrick Jr. and Jalen Summers. This will be his second year coaching football and his coaching philosophy is “Practice the way you play.”

Richard Holt – Wide Receivers/Corners, Freshman

Coach Richard Holt was born and raised in Compton, California. He graduated in 1987 from Carson High School where he played one year of varsity football. He attended college at the University of Arizona where he started for three years at cornerback for the Wildcats. Coach Holt was later drafted by the New York Jets. He played four seasons with the Arizona Rattlers and one season with the Memphis Maddogs of the Canadian Football League. He previously coached varsity for six years at Westview High School in Avondale, Arizona. He also coached five years at the youth level for the Gilbert Broncos, a Pop Warner team. This is Coach Holt’s fourth year coaching at the freshman level for the Chandler Wolves. His personal coaching philosophy is “To help student athletes excel in all areas of life including getting better daily on the football field.”

Michael Scottie Limbs – Running Backs, Freshman

Michael Scottie Limbs, also known as Coach Scottie, was born in Phoenix but raised in Mesa, Arizona. He lived on many Air Force bases as a child. Coach Scottie comes from a pedigree of athletes in this state as two of his uncles are in the Mesa City Sports Hall of Fame, Sterling Bonner and Cornell Fisher. He attended Westwood High School in Mesa where he was All-State Honorable Mention at the fullback position. He is proud to state that he was coached by Jerry Lopez and Bob Soza. He also received a trophy for Outstanding Running Back. He later attended Mesa Community College for two years where he played running back, kickoff returner and punt returner under Head Coach Paul Widmer. Coach Scottie coached seven years at the youth level for a Pop Warner team in Mesa, Arizona and is in his twelfth year coaching the freshman running backs at Chandler High School. His personal coaching philosophy is “One of nurturing young men, not just making good football players, but making true men out of them.”

Tanner Lopez – Offensive Line/Defensive Line, Freshman

Tanner Lopez was born and raised in Chandler, Arizona. Coach Lopez attended Chandler High School. He loved playing football for Chandler and is grateful for the opportunity to go to college for free. Coach Lopez attended Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He played five seasons of football as a Northern State Wolf. He cherished every moment of it and thankful for the educational he received. This is Coach Lopez’ first year coaching at Chandler High School. His personal coaching philosophy is “Teach the love for the game of football along with its lessons that translate to life.”

Kirby McLennan – Linebackers, Freshman

Coach Kirby McLennan was born and raised in Oklahoma. He relocated to Arizona in 1991 from Columbia, Maryland. Coach McLennan attended Nowata High School where he played football as a fullback and strong safety. In his Senior year, he was a team captain and was also recognized as an All District player and Honorable Mention All State Fullback while averaging 7.6 yards per carry. He later attended Oklahoma University and started one year as a cornerback in the Big Eight Freshman League. Coach McLennan has ten years of coaching experience at the youth level for both the Southeast Valley and Chandler Youth Football leagues, as a running back and linebacker coach. He has two grown sons, Matt and Austin. This is Coach McLennan’s third year coaching at Chandler High School.

Brett Boyd – Head Coach/Wide Receivers, Freshman

Coach Brett Boyd is originally from Youngstown, OH, but played Varsity football locally at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale. He graduated in 1992 from Arizona State University. Coach Boyd also played 16 years of Australian Rules Football for Chicago Sharks, San Diego Lions and the Phoenix Hawks. Coach Boyd previously coached Quarterbacks at Hamilton High School. Prior to that, Coach Boyd was a  youth head coach for 6 years, winning 2 state championships, 2 western regional championships and won the 2016 National Championship in Florida, which was the first National Championship for 7th/8th grade for the state of Arizona.

Jeff Conover – Wide Receivers, Freshman

Kyle Hess – Quarterback/ Pass Game Coordinator

Coach Kyle Hess was born in Downey, California but has lived in Chandler, Arizona since he was two years old. Coach Hess attended Chandler High School where he played football for all four years, with three of those years being on varsity. He started at quarterback his junior and senior seasons. He totaled 4500 passing yards, 1300 rushing yards and 55 touchdowns. In his senior season, he earned 1st Team All Region and Honorable Mention All State. After high school, he attended Adams State University where he was redshirted his only season there due to injury. He eventually transferred to Northern Arizona University where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Coach Hess helped out with the local youth football programs for over four years, specifically training quarterbacks. He was the Offensive Coordinator at the JV level for Chandler High back in 2007. This will now be his third year coaching at the high school level as a quarterback coach for the freshman team. Married for 9 years, 2 Dogs Nala and Simba, and Baby Boy Ezekiel due in July!
